National Trust - Winster Market House

A squat stone building with all the presence of a local strongman in a village pub, Winster Market House sits right in the centre of the village just south of Matlock. It's a seventeenth-century structure, all weathered grit and character, which once served as the beating heart of the market town's commerce. These days it's in the hands of the National Trust, which means you can actually go inside and have a proper look around.

What you're really paying for here is the sense of stepping back into provincial England when it actually mattered. The building itself tells the story better than any placard - exposed beams, period details, the sort of thing that gets history buffs genuinely excited. It won't take long.
