The home of George Bernard Shaw sits tucked away just outside Hitchin, and stepping into Shaw's Corner feels like interrupting someone mid-thought. The Irish playwright lived here for nearly 50 years, and his fingerprints are all over the place - literally, on the typewriter he bashed away at, and figuratively, in every corner of this modest red-brick villa.

You'll wander through rooms crammed with books, personal letters, and the sort of clutter that tells you this was a working home, not a museum set-piece. The garden studio where he actually wrote his plays is the real draw - a circular writing hut that looks like it might blow away but somehow contains pure theatrical genius. His sitting room, with views across the garden, still feels inhabited. The kitchen remains frozen in time, which is either charming or a bit melancholy depending on your mood.

History buffs will spend a solid two hours here, though casual visitors often whip through in 45 minutes. Families with teenagers interested in theatre will find it worthwhile; younger kids might struggle with the reverent quietness of it all. It's free to wander the grounds, though the house itself requires admission.

Timing-wise, spring and early summer are lovely - the garden actually looks lived-in rather than abandoned. Coming from either Commons Wood or Almshoe Glamping (both within six miles), you could combine this with a walk around Hitchin itself.
