National Trust - Sand Point

The walk out to Sand Point is frankly the whole point. This stubby headland juts into the Bristol Channel just south of Burnham-on-Sea, and the National Trust keeps it deliberately low-key - which is exactly why it's worth the trip. You get proper coastal views across the channel into Wales, and on clear days the visibility is excellent.

The path itself takes about twenty minutes across sand and shale, depending on the tide. Here's the thing though: you absolutely need to check tide times before you go. Get caught out and you're scrambling or waiting hours. It's not dramatic, but it's real enough to pay attention to.

Once you're out there, it's genuinely peaceful. The headland's low, windswept, and there's not much in the way of facilities - just the landscape and your own company. It suits walkers more than families with small children, largely because the journey matters more than a destination with picnic tables and an ice cream van. Historians might find the geology interesting; the rock formations tell you something about the area's industrial past, though there's minimal interpretation on site.

Free to access, and it slots nicely into a longer coastal walk if you're staying at Channel View Touring Park or anywhere around Burnham. The town itself is ordinary, but the headland's worth an hour of your time, especially if you're exploring the Somerset coast properly. Go midway through your visit rather than on a rushed afternoon.
