National Trust - Nunnington Hall

The moment you turn into the drive at Nunnington Hall, you're struck by how un-showy it all is. This isn't some grand palace - it's a proper Tudor and Georgian manor house that actually feels lived-in, even though the National Trust runs it now. The hall sits on the River Rye, just outside York, and the setting alone makes the visit worthwhile.

Inside, you're wandering through rooms that tell the story of ordinary wealthy people across centuries. The furniture is good without being pompous, the paintings are genuinely interesting, and there's a kitchen that makes you grateful you weren't doing the cooking in 1650. The real highlight is the Carlisle Collection - hundreds of miniature rooms and period settings crammed into cabinets. It's oddly mesmerising, the kind of thing adults get weirdly absorbed in whilst kids decide within five minutes whether they're bored or fascinated.

Allow a solid two hours if you're doing the house properly, less if you're just poking round the gardens and the tea room. The grounds are pleasant rather than spectacular - there's the river, some woodland walks, and it's all very gentle. Families with younger children might find it a bit heavy on the touring-round-rooms side, though the collection of old toys keeps them engaged for a bit.

It works well as a half-day from either Cliff Farm Holidays or Yorkshire Burrows near Pickering - both are close enough for an easy drive. Pair it with a walk in Ryedale or a proper wander round York itself.
