National Trust Lisnabreeny Cregagh Glen

The Glen cuts through farmland south of Belfast like someone's drawn a knife through butter - steep wooded sides, a proper stream at the bottom, and paths that actually feel like you've stumbled onto something real rather than a manicured nature trail. Lisnabreeny Cregagh Glen is a National Trust site that most visitors miss entirely, which is probably why it still feels like something worth discovering.

You get a decent woodland walk here, nothing massive but genuine enough. The stream is the main draw - water's clear, the tree cover's thick, and there's a quietness you won't find near Belfast proper. Allow an hour or so, maybe ninety minutes if you poke around. It's free to access, which helps.

Walkers will get more from this than families with young kids - the paths aren't exactly pram-friendly and there's nothing in the way of facilities or attractions to keep children entertained once the initial novelty wears off. Parents will find themselves managing bored offspring within half an hour. But if you're after a gentle amble before heading to either Dundonald Touring Caravan Park or The Pods at Streamvale, it's a solid option.

The timing matters. Spring and early autumn when the light filters through properly and the undergrowth isn't a tangle. Winter's muddy and wet - bring boots. Worth the detour from Belfast if you're based at one of the nearby parks and need a leg-stretch, but don't bank on it being the highlight of your trip.
