National Trust - Hawford Dovecote

A squat, sturdy brick tower stands in the fields near Worcester, its exterior pockmarked with hundreds of small holes. This is Hawford Dovecote, and it's one of those National Trust properties that rewards a quiet visit without the crowds.

Inside those holes - called nesting boxes - pigeons once lived by the hundreds. Medieval and Tudor landowners kept dovecotes like this one for the birds' meat, eggs, and droppings (which made excellent fertiliser). What strikes you immediately is the sheer practicality of the design. Holes spiral up the inner walls, each one a tiny pigeon apartment, and a rotating ladder in the centre allowed farmers to access nests at the top without scrambling up external walls.

It's not a place for a long stay. Thirty minutes is realistic, more if you're genuinely fascinated by agricultural history or medieval farming methods. You'll get the most from it if you're already combining it with walks through the Worcestershire countryside or visiting nearby parks like Ockeridge Rural Retreats or Pennlake Vale Glamping.

The location is genuinely lovely - open farmland, no queues, no gift shop. It feels slightly remote even though Worcester is only a few miles away. The downside? The interior can feel cramped, and on grey days it reads more as a solid brick cylinder than romantic heritage. Go in sunshine, keep expectations modest, and you'll appreciate why farmers valued these things for centuries.
