National Trust - Greys Court

Greys Court sits on the edge of Henley-on-Thames, a proper Tudor manor that's been in the hands of the National Trust for decades. It's not your typical stately home - the house itself is intimate rather than grand, and what makes it genuinely worth the visit is the sheer amount of stuff to do on the grounds. There's a working walled garden that's genuinely lovely, a maze that kids will spend a good hour getting lost in, and peacocks wandering about like they own the place.

The house itself tells you something real about English country life - less "look at my wealth" and more "we actually live here." You'll find original furnishings, family portraits, and the kind of worn elegance that feels lived-in rather than preserved in aspic. Most people spend two to three hours on site and don't feel rushed.

Historians will appreciate the medieval tower and the layers of different periods the house has picked up over centuries. Families with younger kids get proper value from the gardens and maze alone. It's the sort of place where you can wander at your own pace without feeling herded through.

If you're camped at Swiss Farm or Henley Four Oaks, you're barely twenty minutes away. This works well as a mid-week stop during a broader Thames Valley tour rather than a full day commitment. Admission is paid, naturally, but NT members get in free. Go mid-week if you can - weekends get busier and the whole experience feels less peaceful.
