National Trust - Fowey Estuary

The Fowey Estuary is one of those stretches of water that makes you understand why people move to Cornwall and never leave. Managed by the National Trust, it's a proper working landscape - fishing boats actually moor here, kayaks slip between the creeks, and the light hits the water differently depending on the time of day. You're looking at the meeting point of river and sea, with Polruan sitting on the eastern bank and Fowey across the water.

What you actually do here depends on your mood. Some days you'll walk the South West Coast Path as it sweeps along the estuary cliffs - the views open up suddenly and it's the kind of walk that makes your legs work but feels worth every step. Other times you'll just sit on the foreshore, watch the tide turn, and nurse a coffee from one of the cafés in Polruan. If you've got kayaks or a boat, the estuary itself is the draw - it's sheltered, scenic, and full of little details worth exploring.

Families with restless kids might find the appeal limited to a hour or two, unless they're the type who'll spend a morning turning over rocks. History types and walkers will get far more from it. The walking is genuinely good - proper coastal paths rather than seafront strolls.

It's free to access and no booking needed. If you're staying at Par Sands, Tremeer Farm, or East Crinnis Holiday Park, you're within easy reach - it makes a natural half-day stop between other activities. Summer's the obvious time, but autumn here is less crowded and the light's often better.
