National Trust - Fontmell and Melbury Downs

The chalk downland here rolls out in proper waves, and once you're up on the ridge you understand why people bother walking for miles to stand on a Dorset hilltop. Fontmell and Melbury Downs, managed by the National Trust just outside Shaftesbury, gives you that exact experience without needing to be a serious hiker.

It's open grassland with views that stretch across the Blackmore Vale, and on a clear day you can see for thirty miles or more. The walking is straightforward enough for families with older children, though younger kids might find the initial climb tedious. Serious walkers will appreciate the network of paths that let you plot a route lasting anything from forty minutes to half a day.

The main appeal here is the ecology, honestly. These are ancient downs, chalk grassland that's been grazed for centuries, and you'll see wildflowers that don't grow in managed gardens - purple orchids, horseshoe vines, small blue butterflies. It's not dramatic like some of the Purbeck coast, but it's genuinely beautiful in a subtle way. Bring binoculars if you're into birds.

Access is free and there's parking at Fontmell village. Spring and early summer are best - the wildflowers are properly outstanding then. If you're staying at Gold Hill Glamping nearby, it's only twenty minutes' walk from there, making it an easy add-on. Worth combining with other walks in the area to make a proper day of it.
