National Trust - Finch Foundry

The clang of the hammer on metal stops you dead in your tracks the moment you walk into Finch Foundry. This isn't some sterile museum - it's a working tin and copper foundry that's been operating since 1814, and you can actually watch the craftspeople pour molten metal and shape it into tools, just as they did two centuries ago.

It's tucked away near Stibb, a few miles outside Exeter, and the whole place has this wonderful rough-around-the-edges authenticity. You're not touring behind velvet ropes here. The foundry floor is genuinely hot, genuinely loud, and genuinely impressive. Watching the casting process takes maybe 20 minutes, but lingering over the workshops and water wheel could easily stretch to two hours if you're into industrial heritage.

Historically minded adults will absolutely love this. Kids need to be at least eight or nine to really grasp what's happening, though younger ones might find the noise and spectacle entertaining for a bit. Families planning a stint at Woodland Springs Touring Park - just 3.7 miles away - could easily slot this in as a half-day adventure between park activities.

It's free to look around the foundry, though donations are expected. Visit on a working day if you can, because the whole point is seeing the foundry actually in operation. Weekends can be hit-or-miss. The tea room does decent coffee, which you'll want after the sensory onslaught of the casting floor.
