It's a proper walk - the path up from the car park near Salisbury is no gentle ramble, and on a blustery day you'll feel every bit of that elevation. But once you're standing inside the concentric earthworks, catching your breath and taking in the landscape, it clicks why people chose this spot 2,500 years ago.

The ring itself - those dramatic ditches and ramparts - is remarkably intact. You can walk the perimeter and trace the defensive lines, imagining iron-clad tribespeople doing the same. There's nothing to "do" here in the conventional sense. No interpretation boards, no gift shop, just grass, earth, and history underfoot. That's rather the point.

Historians and hill fort enthusiasts will find it genuinely rewarding. Families with older kids who don't mind a proper hike will manage fine, though very young ones might find the walk tedious for the reward. It's free to visit and you can spend anything from 45 minutes to two hours up there depending on how thoroughly you explore.

If you're camping at Salisbury Camping and Caravanning Club Site or Salisbury Hillside - both within a few miles - this makes a natural morning outing before heading to Stonehenge or exploring Salisbury itself. Go on a clear day if you can. The wind can be relentless, and when the weather closes in, you're essentially alone with some earthworks and the chalk.
