National Trust - Dorneywood Garden

The gardens at Dorneywood sit on 200 acres of proper manicured grounds that feel rather more grand than you'd expect just outside Maidenhead. This National Trust property was once the country retreat for Foreign Office ministers, and walking through it, you understand why they fought to keep it. You get the main house from the outside (it's not open to the public), but the gardens are what you're here for - rolling lawns, specimen trees, and borders that look effortless until you realise the work involved. Spring is when the place really earns its keep, with rhododendrons and azaleas doing their thing, but summer's not bad either if you don't mind the crowds. Allow a good hour to wander round properly, maybe two if you're the type to sit on a bench and actually enjoy the silence for once. It's free to enter, which is decent, though parking can be tight on weekends. Families with young children might find it a bit sedate - there's not much to actually do except walk and look, which is fine if you've got kids who can manage that, less so if they need constant stimulation. Coming from Highclere Caravan and Camping Park five miles away, it's an easy addition to a broader Berkshire and Buckinghamshire tour. Not earth-shattering, but genuinely peaceful, and the kind of place that makes you slow down whether you want to or not.
