National Trust - Cookham Common

Common land in the Thames Valley, Cookham Common is one of those proper English landscapes where you can actually breathe. Rolling grassland, scattered trees, and enough space to feel like you've escaped even though Marlow is right there. It's managed by the National Trust, which means it's kept sensible - no over-development, no theme park nonsense.

What you're really doing here is walking. There's no visitor centre or café, no admission fee to fret about. You come for the space and the views across the valley, and you get them. On a decent day it's genuinely lovely, the sort of place where you can kill a morning loop without thinking too hard about it. The common works best for walkers and anyone after a proper country break without the stately home fatigue. Families with older kids will manage fine; toddlers might find it a bit samey after twenty minutes.

Being so close to Marlow makes this a useful addition to a Thames Valley caravan trip. The nearby parks - Hurleyford Farm and Hurley Riverside Park are both within a couple of miles - sit you near decent walking country without being remote. You could easily combine Cookham Common with a pub lunch in Marlow and call it a day. It's not spectacular, but it's the kind of place that makes a holiday actually restful rather than relentlessly busy. Allow an hour to ninety minutes depending on how slowly you move.
