National Trust - Brean Down Fort

The walk up Brean Down is steep - genuinely steep - but worth every laboured breath. This 97-metre limestone headland rises abruptly from the Somerset levels near Burnham-on-Sea, and the National Trust fort crowning its peak feels like a proper expedition rather than a casual stroll.

You're looking at the remains of a Victorian-era coastal defence fortification, built in the 1860s when Britain was convinced the French might invade at any moment. The crumbling gun emplacements and thick stone walls tell that story better than any museum plaque. On a clear day the views sweep across the Bristol Channel to Wales - genuinely sweeping, not the usual oversold outlook.

Allow 90 minutes to two hours if you're walking from the car park and want to explore properly. The path is manageable but relentless uphill, so it's not ideal for very young children or anyone with mobility issues. Teenagers and keen walkers will find it straightforward enough, though they'll feel it in their legs on the way down.

It's free and open year-round as far as access goes, though weather can make the exposed summit unpleasant in winter. Spring and autumn are ideal - crisp air, fewer tourists, and the coastal light is proper golden.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Channel View, Warren Farm or Golden Sands are all close - Brean Down makes a worthwhile half-day break from arcade games and ice cream vans. Families will find it genuinely interesting rather than just another coastal walk.
