National Trust - Blakeney National Nature Reserve

The marshes and shingle banks at Blakeney stretch for miles along the Norfolk coast, and the National Trust runs a proper wildlife spectacle here. You're looking at saltmarsh, mudflats, and reed beds that shift with the tide - it's wilder than manicured, which is exactly the point. Binoculars are essential. The birdwatching is genuinely exceptional, especially in spring and autumn when migrating species drop in. Winter brings avocets and spoonbills; summer attracts warblers and terns. Even non-twitchers get swept up in it.

The reserve is free to access, though the car park charges a couple of quid. Walking the shingle ridge takes an hour or so if you dawdle, longer if you're scanning every inlet for rarer species. Families with young kids can manage the easy paths, though buggies are awkward on the shingle itself. Bring proper binoculars - the birds won't cooperate if you're squinting at them from fifty metres away.

The nearest town is Fakenham, about twenty minutes inland, which makes Blakeney a solid day out if you're based at Kelling Heath Holiday Park five miles down the coast. The light here is extraordinary - Norfolk's that flat, so at golden hour the whole marsh turns copper. Autumn is best for crowds - fewer people but the migration window is ace. If you're after isolation and serious birdwatching, this beats the busier heritage sites by a mile.
