National Trust - Beatrix Potter Gallery and Hawkshead

The house where Beatrix Potter lived and worked sits in the heart of Hawkshead village, a proper Lake District gem. You're walking into the actual rooms where she illustrated her stories - original manuscripts, watercolours, and sketches line the walls, and there's something genuinely moving about seeing her working desk. The gallery is small enough to take in during an afternoon, maybe two hours if you're thorough, but big enough that you won't feel rushed.

Potter fans will be in heaven. Anyone with an interest in illustration or the raw process behind those famous tales will find it worthwhile. Kids usually enjoy spotting Peter Rabbit references, though the content is fairly adult-focused - it's really a museum for people who care about the artist herself, not just her characters.

Hawkshead itself is picture-postcard stuff: cobbled streets, whitewashed cottages, a decent village pub. You could easily combine this with exploring the nearby Lake District parks - Low Wray Campsite and Skelwith Fold are both within a couple of miles if you're based at a caravan park, and Lakeside Retreat Glamping offers something posher. The village has enough going on to justify a full day trip, particularly if you're keen on Lakeland history and village walks.

Admission isn't free - it's a National Trust property - but if you're already staying in the area for a week, it's worth the detour. Weather can be dodgy in winter, so check opening hours before heading over from Colthouse.
