National Trust - Alfriston Clergy House

This half-timbered medieval house tucked into the Cuckmere Valley near Newhaven feels like stepping through a door marked 'do not enter' - except the National Trust has let us in. Built around 1350, it's one of the oldest parsonages in England, and the creaking floorboards and crooked doorways make that genuinely tangible rather than just something you read on a plaque.

You're walking through rooms where actual clergy lived and worked, not some grandiose manor house - it's intimate and a bit cluttered with period furniture that suggests people actually sat here. The garden out back, full of medieval herbs and plants, is where most visitors seem to linger longest. Downstairs is tight; upstairs manages to be both cramped and atmospheric.

It works best if you're already keen on medieval history or if you're breaking up a day's walking in the South Downs. Kids under ten might find it dull after twenty minutes - there's not much to do, just to look at.
