National Railway Museum York

The locomotives here are genuine show-stoppers. You walk into the Great Hall and suddenly there's the Flying Scotsman - massive, gleaming, properly awe-inspiring up close. The National Railway Museum in York is one of those places that grabs you even if you didn't think you were interested in trains.

It's free to get in, which is brilliant. You can easily spend three to four hours wandering around without feeling rushed, though families with younger kids might want to factor in two hours minimum. The collection spans from Victorian steam engines to modern High Speed trains, and there's enough interactive stuff to keep children engaged rather than just staring at old metal.

What really works is the variety. You can climb aboard some of the carriages, watch restoration work happening in the workshops, and there's a proper sense of how trains actually functioned day-to-day. The Mallard is here too - the holder of the world speed record for steam locomotives. Seeing it feels like witnessing a piece of transport history that's genuinely rather significant.

It suits anyone with even a passing interest in engineering or social history. Train enthusiasts will spend all day here. If you're staying at Nurseries Caravan Park or Wagtail Park on the outskirts of York, it's a straightforward visit - just head into the city centre and you're there. York itself is worth a day or two anyway, so combining it with the Minster and the city walls makes sense. The museum never feels crowded in the way some attractions do, which is another tick in its favour.
