Naish Hill

The walk up Naish Hill is proper rewarding, especially if you've got an hour to spare and decent legs. You're looking at Somerset's Mendip Hills here - rolling green country that feels a world away from Bristol, even though the city's barely thirty minutes down the road.

The summit itself isn't dramatic. No dramatic cliffs or stone circles waiting at the top. What you get instead is a working landscape - views across farmland, scattered villages, and on a clear day you can see right across the Somerset Levels. It's the kind of vista that makes you understand why people have settled here for centuries.

Families with older kids will manage it fine. The younger ones might find the ascent a bit tedious if they're not keen walkers - it's not steep enough to be exciting, but long enough to test patience. Walkers after a proper leg-stretcher will appreciate the access to wider Mendip trails once you're up there.

Go early if you can. The light's better and you'll have the hilltop mostly to yourself. Late afternoon visits can feel rushed, especially if you're combining it with other Mendip walks. There's no admission charge - it's just open moorland - and no facilities at the top, so bring water.
