Nags Head War Memorial

The stone monument sits quietly on the edge of Nags Head, a village just outside Stroud, recording names that most people walking past don't bother to read. It's the sort of memorial you find in hundreds of English villages - a reminder of the First World War dead, standing sentinel over a place that's moved on but never quite forgotten.

There's nothing flashy about it. No visitor centre, no café, no interpretation boards explaining who these men were or where they fell. You turn up, you look at the names carved into the stone, you think for a bit, and you move on. That's rather the point. It takes five minutes, maybe ten if you're the type to search for family names or sit on the nearby bench and reflect.

This works best for history enthusiasts or anyone with a genuine connection to the area. If you're camping at Tobacconist Farm Campsite just down the road - excellent spot, by the way - it's worth a brief detour on a walk through the Cotswold valleys. The surrounding countryside is what really draws you here though; the memorial is the pause in a longer ramble, not the destination itself.

Access is free and there's no set opening times - it's outdoors and always accessible. Come on a clear day when the light catches the stone properly. Late afternoon works nicely, when you'll have the place to yourself.
