Myton Park

The Avon runs through Myton Park like a thread through fabric, and that's really what this reserve is - a proper slice of riverside habitat just outside Warwick where the landscape hasn't been hammered into submission. You get wetland, meadow, and woodland all tangled together in a way that feels genuinely wild for somewhere so close to town.

It's a nature reserve, so don't pitch up expecting facilities or manicured paths. What you will find is birdwatching that actually pays off - winter brings Eurasian wigeon and shovelers, spring brings warblers, and throughout the year you might spot muntjac deer if you're quiet enough. Families with proper walkers do well here; younger kids will find it a bit samey after thirty minutes unless they're already into spotting things. The meadows flood seasonally, which is brilliant for amphibians but means timing matters.

Go in spring or early autumn for the best combination of birds and dry feet. Allow two hours minimum to make the trip worthwhile from Warwick town centre - you're not here for a quick turn around the block. It's free access and no paperwork needed.

Coupled with stays at Knight's Village near Warwick Castle or one of the rural parks like Coplow Woodland Retreat or Harbury Fields Farm, Myton Park works as a low-key morning before hitting the castle or heading to better-known walks. On its own it's specialist interest, but it's genuinely worth the detour if you've got binoculars and a bird book.
