Mynydd Ty-talwyn

The walk up Mynydd Ty-talwyn is short and sharp - you're looking at a proper little climb that rewards you with views across Bridgend County Borough and down towards Porthcawl. It's not a mountain in any serious sense, but it punches above its weight as a local viewpoint, especially on clear days when you can see right across the Vale of Glamorgan.

This is walkers' territory, pure and simple. The path itself is straightforward enough, though it gets steep in places and can be muddy after rain. You'll want proper footwear. Give yourself an hour to walk up, have a look around, and come back down - longer if you're taking it at a leisurely pace or stopping to photograph the views. It's the sort of place that rewards going on a weekday when it's quieter.

If you're staying at Trecco Bay Holiday Park near Porthcawl, this sits nicely as a half-day excursion - close enough that you won't spend your morning driving, far enough to feel like you've actually gone somewhere. History buffs won't find much up here, but the views alone justify the effort. Fair weather only though - if cloud's down or the weather's turning, you're walking blind, which rather defeats the purpose. It's a cracking spot for sunrise or late afternoon light if you fancy timing it right.
