Mynydd Rhyd-galed (Tarrenhendre East Top)

The walk up Mynydd Rhyd-galed rewards you with one of those rare Mid Wales vistas that actually justifies the leg work. From Machynlleth, it's a straightforward slog onto Tarrenhendre East Top - the proper name locals use - and the views across Powys unfold as you climb. On a clear day, the panorama stretches far enough that you forget how modest the elevation actually is.

It's a walker's hill, plain and simple. Not technical, not dramatic in the Lake District sense, but genuinely lovely once you're up there. The terrain is moorland and grass - bog in places if you're unlucky with the weather - and the path is well-enough trodden that you won't get lost. Budget two to three hours for a comfortable round trip from the car park, depending on your pace and how many times you stop to catch your breath or take photos.

Historically minded visitors will appreciate the Bronze Age cairns scattered across the summit. They're not flashy, but they're there if you know what you're looking for.
