Mynydd Glandulas

The walk up Mynydd Glandulas rewards you with views that stretch across Mid Wales in a way most people never expect from a modest peak. It's not one of those exhausting slogs either - the ascent from Machynlleth is manageable for anyone with reasonable fitness, though the wind can catch you proper on the exposed ridges.

What you're looking at on a clear day is the Dyfi Valley spread out below, with the Cambrian Mountains rolling away to the north. The peak itself is windswept moorland dotted with stones, not dramatic in the Alpine sense but genuinely stirring if you catch it right. There's something satisfying about standing above 2,000 feet in the middle of nowhere, knowing Machynlleth's just a few miles south.

Historically, this area was important grazing land, and you can still read the landscape - old walls, the pattern of moorland management. If you're into that sort of thing, it adds another layer. Fair warning: the weather changes fast up here. I've seen brilliant sunshine turn to thick mist in twenty minutes.

It works well as part of a wider Powys trip, especially if you're based at Gwerniago Campsite nearby. Pair it with wandering Machynlleth's quirky independent shops or tackling one of the other Cambrian peaks if you're feeling ambitious. Allow two to three hours return, depending on your pace and how long you linger. Start early on weekends - it's becoming busier.
