Mynydd Cefn-caer

The walk up Mynydd Cefn-caer from Machynlleth is straightforward enough, though the climb itself is properly steep in places. You're looking at a couple of hours round trip depending on your fitness, and the reward is a genuinely good vantage point across the Dyfi Valley - on a clear day you can see right across to Snowdonia. The peak itself is moorland, boggy in wet weather, with cairns marking the summit. There's nothing fancy up there, no café or visitor centre, just grass and sky and the satisfaction of having earned the view.

This works well for serious walkers wanting a half-day outing from Machynlleth, or families with older kids who don't mind a proper hike. Younger children will struggle with the gradient and the boggy bits, if I'm honest. The nearest landmark everyone recognises is the Machynlleth Clock Tower down in town - you can use that to orientate yourself on the descent.

If you're staying at Gwerniago Campsite, it's practically on your doorstep at just two miles away, which makes this an ideal afternoon tick if weather cooperates. The path is well-trodden enough not to need specialist kit, but proper walking boots matter - trainers will get soaked. Go early in the day if you want photos without cloud cover; the mist rolls in fast from the valley floor. Entry is free, obviously - it's a mountain. Allow two to two and a half hours all in.
