Museum of Scottish Railways

The moment you walk into this place near Dunfermline, you're surrounded by proper old locomotives and carriages. Some are just sat outside, weathered and grand. Inside, there's a working railway workshop where you can actually watch volunteers restoring these machines - that's the real draw, not just looking at static exhibits.

It's brilliant for railway enthusiasts, obviously, but anyone with a passing interest in transport history will find themselves spending longer than expected here. Kids do get engaged, especially if there's restoration work happening. The hands-on bits and the sheer scale of some of these engines keep them entertained beyond the usual museum fatigue.

Allow a good two hours minimum, longer if restoration's underway and you get chatting to the volunteers - they genuinely know their stuff. The site's free to wander round, which is generous. Best visited on a day when work's actually happening; a quiet Tuesday with nobody there is a bit flat.
