Mullicourt Aqueduct

There's a moment when you round the bend near Wisbech and spot it - this rather grand Victorian aqueduct striding across the landscape like it's got somewhere important to be. Mullicourt Aqueduct is one of those structures that makes you stop and think about what Victorians could do when they put their minds to it.

It's a proper piece of engineering, carrying water across what would otherwise be a tricky bit of terrain. You can walk underneath it, around it, and if you're feeling ambitious, along the towpath that runs alongside. The thing about East Anglian landmarks is they don't shout for attention - this one certainly doesn't - but once you know it's there, it becomes a worthwhile detour on a walk or a drive through the flatlands.

The nearest town is Wisbech, which sits just a couple of miles away, so it's easily combined with exploring the wider area. If you've got the kids with you on a holiday at somewhere like Westerby Farm Camping and Glamping - just under two miles away - this makes a decent stretch-the-legs stop without being a full afternoon commitment. Probably takes thirty minutes to an hour to have a proper look round, take some photos, and absorb the slightly odd charm of watching Victorian engineering sit quietly in the Norfolk landscape.

It's the sort of place that appeals to anyone interested in industrial heritage, or folk who just like a good walk with a bit of purpose. Don't expect crowds or visitor facilities. Just bring decent shoes and an appreciation for solid masonry.
