Muckle Moss National Nature Reserve

Bog walking doesn't sound thrilling until you're actually out on Muckle Moss, squelching through one of Northumberland's proper wild spaces just a few miles south of Hexham. This is a genuine nature reserve - open moorland, sphagnum bog, and the kind of landscape that makes you understand why people get obsessed with birdwatching. You're looking at red grouse, golden plover, and if you're lucky, a hen harrier cutting across the skyline.

The walk itself is straightforward enough, though your boots will know about it. Allow an hour or two depending on how far you venture into the reserve. It's not a manicured trail experience - you're on open ground with the Pennines rising around you, which means weather matters here. Come on a clear day and the views stretch for miles. Come in rain and you'll understand why waterproofs exist.

Best suited to walkers and nature enthusiasts rather than young families after a quick leg-stretch. The landscape is magnificent but unforgiving - no facilities, no shelter, properly remote. Summer is obviously more comfortable, though spring and autumn bring better wildlife activity.

The reserve works brilliantly as a morning mission from any of the nearby campsites - Hadrian's Wall Campsite and Langley Dam Glamping are both within striking distance. Pair it with a proper walk along the actual Wall itself, which runs nearby, and you've got a solid day of Northumbrian outdoors sorted. It's the kind of place that reminds you why people bother camping in the first place.
