Mouse Water

A modest reservoir tucked into the South Lanarkshire landscape, Mouse Water sits just a few miles from Lanark and doesn't announce itself with fanfare. You won't find themed attractions or busy cafes here - it's the sort of place locals know about and visitors stumble upon by accident, which is rather the point.

The water itself is ringed by moorland and rough grassland, giving it that quietly wild feel you get in the Scottish Lowlands when you drift away from the main roads. It's good for a walk around the perimeter if you fancy stretching your legs, though the paths can be boggy depending on recent weather. The light changes dramatically across the day here, and the reflections are decent if you've got a camera with you.

This is genuinely more for walkers and folk who enjoy open country than families wanting a day out - there's no playground infrastructure or visitor facilities that I'm aware of. Budget 45 minutes to an hour if you're doing the circuit, longer if you're dawdling or sketching. It works well as part of a larger walk rather than a standalone destination.

The landscape is proper Lowlands - rolling, empty, and occasionally quite bleak in the best possible way.
