About Mount Wood
Walking through here, the trees close in properly, blocking out most of the sky. There's a real sense of being in something ancient, even though the Chilterns have been worked over by humans for centuries. The paths are well-trodden but never crowded, which makes a change from some of the more famous beauty spots in Buckinghamshire.
Families with decent-sized legs will get hours out of it. Younger children might find it a bit samey - it's forest, not a playground with views. Walkers, though, will appreciate the peace and the solid earth underfoot. The walks aren't desperately challenging, which is probably why it doesn't draw the Instagram crowd.
Plan for two to three hours if you're doing a proper circuit, less if you're just having a gentle mooch. It's free, obviously, being woodland. Best on a clear day when the light filters through properly rather than when it's grey and dripping.
If you're camping at Lights Camera Glamping or Fuzzy's Farm, it's within easy striking distance - close enough to feel like a real walk rather than a car journey with a walk attached. Worth fitting in alongside other Chilterns exploration.
