Mount Grace Priory

The ruins of Mount Grace Priory sit on a hillside near Northallerton, and what strikes you first is how quiet the place feels. This was once a Carthusian monastery, one of only nine in England, and the layout tells you exactly how these monks lived - in almost total isolation. Each one had his own two-storey cell with a garden, built so they could pray and work alone. It's genuinely unusual, and you won't find this arrangement anywhere else in the country.

Walking around, you can still make out the individual cells arranged in a square, and the communal buildings in the centre. The church stands ruined but substantial. If you're into medieval monasticism or architecture, this rewards proper attention - the stone walls and foundations reveal how carefully the space was organized for contemplative life. It's not a dramatic ruin like Rievaulx or Fountains Abbey, but it's more intimate, somehow.

History enthusiasts will spend a solid hour here; families with younger kids might manage 45 minutes before restlessness sets in. English Heritage runs it, so admission is likely charged unless you're a member. The site is fairly level and manageable on foot. Cote Ghyll Caravan Park lies just 0.7 miles away - genuinely convenient if you're basing yourself for a few days exploring the North Yorkshire priories. Visit on a quieter weekday if you can; weekends bring crowds and the spell breaks a bit.
