Moulin

The ruins at Moulin sit just outside Pitlochry, a short walk from the village itself. What's actually here is the remains of what was likely a significant medieval settlement - broken stone walls, earthworks, and the kinds of fragments that archaeologists puzzle over for years. There's not much to look at in the way of intact buildings, but if you're into that sort of thing, the landscape tells its own story. The setting matters more than the structures themselves. You're standing on a hillside looking across Perthshire valleys, which gives the whole experience a different weight than shuffling round a neatly reconstructed site would.

It's genuinely only worth your time if you're properly interested in medieval settlement patterns or just fancy a decent walk from Pitlochry with a bit of historical context thrown in. Kids will lose interest within ten minutes. The location rather than the remains is the real draw here.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Milton of Fonab is barely a mile away, or Faskally Woods if you want something slightly quieter - you could easily tack this onto a morning walk without adding much to your journey. It works as a short detour rather than a destination in itself. The Pitlochry area has enough going on that Moulin fits as part of a bigger day out rather than something you'd plan a trip around. Combine it with the actual village of Pitlochry itself, which has proper shops and cafes worth your time.
