Dunnet Head is as far north as you can drive on mainland Britain, and honestly, it's worth the pilgrimage just for the bragging rights. The drive from Thurso takes about twenty minutes, and you wind through moorland that gets progressively wilder until you reach the clifftop car park. There's a lighthouse here - automated now, obviously - but the real draw is standing on that headland and looking out toward the Orkneys, knowing there's nothing but sea between you and the Arctic. On clear days the visibility is tremendous. On misty days, which is most days, you get that moody Scottish atmosphere that photographs tend to underplay.

The walk from the car park to the lighthouse takes roughly fifteen minutes each way across short grass. It's straightforward, not technical, though the wind can be properly fierce up there. Families manage it fine, though younger kids might need a hand on gusty days. The whole experience takes about an hour if you're not dawdling, less if you're just after the photo and the tick-box moment.

What you won't find is a café or visitor centre or any of the usual tourist infrastructure. That's actually quite refreshing. This place feels genuinely remote, which it is. If you're staying at Little Croft Highlands just down the road, you could easily combine it with a morning in Thurso itself, though the town won't hold your attention long. The point itself? Absolutely worth it if you're in the far north anyway. Don't make a special trip from Edinburgh just for this, but when you're up here, don't skip it.
