Mosshall Wood

The woodland walk through Mosshall Wood, just outside Wallingford, is what you'd call a proper tonic if you've spent too long on the A4130. It's not massive - you can work through the main paths in under an hour - but the beech and oak canopy does its job when you need headspace.

What makes it worth stopping for is the carpet of bluebells in spring, which genuinely is rather lovely. The paths are well-maintained and mostly level, so it suits families with younger kids without requiring serious hiking boots. You'll find a few benches scattered about, though don't expect visitor facilities beyond that.

The real pull here is proximity to Wallingford itself. If you're staying at Rolling Fields Glamping six miles away and want a morning woodland potter before hitting the market town for lunch, Mosshall slots in perfectly. It's the kind of walk that adults actually enjoy because it's not a slog, and kids won't complain they're bored after twenty minutes.

Go mid-week if possible. Weekends bring the whole of Oxfordshire out to stretch their legs, and the narrow paths get a bit congested. Early morning light through the leaves in autumn is genuinely photogenic, though I'll admit the summer months are fairly muggy under the canopy.

Free to access, and there's nowhere to buy a coffee, so come prepared. Allow ninety minutes if you're doing the full circuit without rushing.
