Moss Hill

Moss Hill is a proper woodland walk just outside Wantage, the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think. The forest floor is thick with moss - hence the name - and the canopy sits low enough that you feel properly enclosed. It's not vast, so you won't spend hours wandering about getting lost, but that's rather the point.

The main appeal here is the woodland atmosphere itself. Walkers appreciate it because the paths are straightforward and the trees create that meditative quality you're after. Parents with younger kids find it manageable - there's enough space to let them run about without constant anxiety, though it's not a themed playground or anything. If you're after dramatic vistas or marked viewpoints, look elsewhere.

Timing-wise, allow 45 minutes to an hour for a decent wander. Spring's excellent when the woodland floor comes alive, but honestly, any season works if you dress properly. Being free and accessible, you won't need to book anything or plan around opening times.

Stay at Lorne Hill Farm just down the road and you've got a proper base. The combination works well - a quiet forest walk to clear your head in the morning, then back to camp for breakfast. It's not flashy, but Moss Hill does exactly what a forest should: gets you among the trees without fuss.
