Moredun

You won't find tour buses at Moredun, which is rather the point. This Iron Age hill fort sits just outside Perth in Perthshire, a defensive settlement that once commanded decent views over the surrounding landscape. The earthworks are still visible if you know what you're looking at - a series of terraced banks and ditches that tell you this was properly fortified, not just a casual settlement.

What appeals here depends entirely on your tolerance for archaeological detective work. Serious history enthusiasts will spend a proper hour picking through the remains and imagining Pictish life around 2,000 years ago. Families with young children might find it underwhelming after twenty minutes - there's no visitor centre, no interpretation boards, just the bones of what was once important. Walkers en route between Perth and the wider Tayside countryside often stumble upon it and find themselves oddly gripped by the quietness of the place.

Getting there is straightforward enough from Perth itself, and admission appears to be free, which at least removes the financial sting if it doesn't grip you. Allow an hour if you're interested in the archaeology, half that if you're just passing through. It works nicely as a short detour before heading to Scone Camping and Caravanning Club Site - rated exceptionally well - or Perth Caravan Park if you're basing yourself in the area. Best visited on a clear day when the views justify the small climb.
