Moorish Tower

The tower itself is a squat, rather austere affair - less fairy tale castle, more practical fortress. Built in the 17th century, it sits in Castlewellan, a tidy market town that makes for a sensible base if you're planning to tackle the Mourne Mountains. The structure's Moorish influence is subtle; you're really looking at sturdy stone walls and a no-nonsense design that speaks more to defensive necessity than architectural flourish.

Truth be told, it's not a major draw on its own. You can walk round it in ten minutes, maybe fifteen if you're the type who reads every historical marker. The real appeal is the location - Castlewellan sits right on the edge of proper walking country, and the tower works as a quick cultural pause before or after tackling one of the forest park trails nearby. If you're camping at Escape Glamping just down the road, or staying at one of the half-dozen other sites within a couple of miles, it's worth a morning wander.

Historically minded visitors will get more from it than families with restless kids. There's no visitor centre, no cafe, no interactive exhibits - just the tower and what you bring to understanding it. The real landscape around here - rolling fields, glimpses of Slieve Croob in the distance - is frankly more compelling than the structure itself. Go if you're in the area and keen on 17th-century fortifications. Skip it if you're short on time.
