Moor Dam Hillfort

The ramparts of Moor Dam are still clearly visible after all these centuries - you can actually walk the perimeter and trace the defensive ditches that made this Iron Age settlement tick. It's essentially a circular earthwork sitting on high ground near Clackmannan, and what strikes you most is how the ancients picked this spot for command of the landscape. There's not much in the way of interpretation on site, so you'll need to bring your own curiosity and maybe some knowledge of Iron Age settlement patterns to get the most from it.

History enthusiasts will find this genuinely rewarding. It's the sort of place where you stand on the rampart and suddenly see why someone built here - the views across Fife tell you everything about territorial control and early farming communities. Not one for the under-tens who expect handed-on-a-plate information and playground facilities, but proper rewarding for anyone interested in Scotland's pre-Roman past.

Allow an hour to walk the site and poke about. It's free, obviously - it's just a hillfort. Visit when the grass isn't waterlogged, so spring through early autumn is best. The site sits within easy driving distance of West Fife Pods if you're basing yourself there for a park holiday. Nearby Clackmannan gives you somewhere to grab a coffee afterward. Not showy or Instagram-friendly, but authentic and still genuinely atmospheric on a clear day.
