Moncrieffe Hill

The walk up Moncrieffe Hill takes about twenty minutes if you're not dawdling, and the payoff is a proper panorama across Perth and the River Tay valley. It's not a dramatic peak - more of a gentle rise through woodland - but that's rather the point. This is the sort of walk where you can take your time, spot the occasional deer, and not arrive at the top knackered.

From the summit you're looking across Perthshire in all directions. On a clear day, the Ochil Hills rise up to the north. It's the kind of view that makes you understand why Perth mattered as a settlement. The hill itself has old fortifications dotted about if you're keen on history, though you won't find dramatic ruins - more like earthworks and hints of what came before.

Walkers will appreciate it as a straightforward, well-trodden route. Families with kids can manage it without complaint, though younger legs might need a breather halfway. There's nothing to pay, no opening hours to worry about - just turn up. Forty minutes return is realistic if you're not stopping for every photo.

Stay at either Scone Camping and Caravanning Club Site or Perth Caravan Park & Camp Site - both within a few miles - and you've got a proper base for exploring the area. The hill works as a morning walk before heading elsewhere in Tayside, or a sunset circuit if the light's decent. It's genuine Perthshire landscape without the tourist crush.
