MOLES Archaeology

The Museum of Local Expertise and Science - MOLES to everyone who's been - sits in Sheffield and fills a gap that doesn't exist anywhere else round here. It's a proper deep dive into what's been dug up from beneath South Yorkshire's feet, which sounds niche until you realise how much history is literally underground.

What you're looking at inside is archaeology that matters locally. Roman finds, medieval pottery, Iron Age bits and bobs - the kind of stuff that makes you understand why people actually lived here rather than just passing through. The displays aren't trying to compete with the British Museum. They're trying to tell you something about Sheffield and the valleys around it.

History buffs will spend a good couple of hours here. Families with kids aged eight and up might get an hour or so out of it before the novelty wears off - depends how much your lot enjoys poking about in old artefacts. Casual visitors will find it worthwhile if you're already in Sheffield, less essential if you're making a special trip.

If you're based at one of the nearby campsites - Fox Hagg Farm is closest at under four miles out - this works as a rainy-day option or a morning before heading out walking. Wyming Brook Farm's the better rated of the three if you're choosing between them. MOLES fills a quiet hour without requiring serious planning, which is fine for what it is.
