Moel Maes-y-wern-goch

The walk up Moel Maes-y-wern-goch is steep enough that you'll feel it in your thighs, but the payoff makes sense once you're standing on top looking across Powys. It's not a famous peak - nothing here gets rammed with Instagram crowds - which is rather the point. From Machynlleth, it's an easy drive into proper hill-walking territory, the sort of place where you can actually think without dodging selfie sticks.

The ascent takes the best part of an hour from the base, depending on fitness and how often you stop to catch your breath. The views across Mid Wales open up gradually rather than all at once, which somehow makes them feel earned. On a clear day you get decent sight lines toward Cader Idris and the surrounding moorland. The summit itself is moorland, windswept and open - nothing fancy, just good honest walking.

This works best for people who actually enjoy walking rather than those after a quick tourist tick. Families with younger kids might find it a bit grinding; teenagers who are into hiking will get hours out of it. The nearest proper base is Gwerniago Campsite, a proper working farm spot about forty minutes' drive away, which gives you access to this whole corner of Powys without the hassle of booking accommodation in town. Go on a weekday if you can - the weather matters more than the day of the week, but at least you'll have the hill to yourself. Allow three to four hours for a round trip if you're moving steadily.
