Model Boating Pond

The pond sits on the outskirts of Ferryhill, a proper little spot where you can watch remote-control boats dart across the water with surprising speed. It's the kind of place locals know well but tourists often miss - peaceful, well-maintained, and genuinely free to wander around.

The boats themselves are the main draw. Model enthusiasts bring everything from tiny speedboats to larger sailing vessels, and watching them manoeuvre is oddly hypnotic. Children love it, though they'll get the most from it if they're old enough to understand the control and precision involved - toddlers might lose interest after twenty minutes. There's decent space to walk around the perimeter, so it works as a casual stroll rather than a sitting-down affair.

Allow an hour if you're just having a look, longer if the boats are out in force and you fancy chatting with the operators. No facilities that I'm aware of, so bring a coffee from town if you're planning to linger. The weather in Aberdeenshire being what it is, go on a clear day when the water's calm - rough conditions mean no boats and a distinctly less entertaining visit.

If you're staying at Deeside Holiday Park nearby, it makes a decent alternative to the bigger attractions. It's low-key, costs nothing, and breaks up a day nicely between other activities. Not a full-day destination, but a solid half-hour detour worth making.
