Mockerkin Tarn

The walk up to Mockerkin Tarn is what sells it, to be honest. Starting from near Cockermouth, you climb steadily through moorland and forest until you reach this small mountain lake tucked beneath fells. The water's dark and still most days, reflecting whatever's happening in the sky above - dramatic when clouds roll in, glassy and serene when the sun's out.

It's a straightforward fell lake, nothing spectacular in terms of facilities or infrastructure, which is precisely why it works. You get decent views across the water towards higher peaks, and it's well-used enough that the path is clear without being crowded. Families with reasonably fit legs will manage the walk fine; very young children might find it tough depending on the terrain that day. Allow two to three hours for the round trip, depending on pace.

Historically it was used to power mills in the valley below, so there's a bit of industrial heritage lurking in the landscape if you're into that sort of thing. The tarn itself is free to access - park sensibly near the start of the footpath and head up from there.

If you're staying at Greysouthen Caravan Site just outside Cockermouth, this makes a solid morning's excursion before lunch. It's not the Lake District's showiest attraction, but as a walker's spot with genuine peace and quiet, it punches above its weight. Better on a clear day than in drizzle, mind you.
