What makes it worthwhile is the backdrop: the Mournes rise dramatically behind the far shore, creating reflections that photograph beautifully on still mornings. Anglers seem to rate it, judging by the number of rods I've spotted along the banks.

Families with restless children might find it a bit too sedate after half an hour, but it's ideal for dog walkers or anyone wanting to stretch their legs between longer hikes. The path around the edge is mostly level, though it can get muddy after rain.

For those staying at the glamping sites scattered around Castlewellan, it makes a pleasant morning or evening stroll. You're only a few miles from Tollymore's more dramatic forest walks and the climbing trails into the Mournes proper. Free to visit, naturally, and accessible year-round though winter visits can be properly bleak when the mist rolls in.
