Milton of Drumlochy

A Roman camp sits quietly in the Perthshire countryside near Blairgowrie, and unless you're properly looking for it, you'll walk right past. Milton of Drumlochy is what remains of a military installation from around AD 80 - earthworks, mostly, the kind of thing that rewards a bit of imagination and a decent OS map.

What you're actually seeing are the ditches and ramparts that once enclosed Roman soldiers on the march north. It's not Hadrian's Wall or anything showy. There are no reconstructions, no visitor centre, no one flogging you a guidebook. Just the land itself, shaped by someone two millennia ago, waiting for you to join the dots.

This is entirely for the archaeology enthusiast or the walker who likes their history served straight, no sugar. Families with small kids will find it rather dull - there's nothing interactive about lumps in a field. But if you're the sort who gets a proper thrill from standing where legionaries once stood, it's worth the detour from Blairgowrie.

Allow thirty minutes to walk the site and take in the layout. Spring and early summer are best - the grass is manageable and the light picks out the earthworks more clearly. It's free and open access, which is rather lovely.
