Millgate Picnic Area

The Millgate Picnic Area sits alongside the River Swale near Thirsk, offering a proper breath of fresh air without the crowds you'd find at more famous spots. It's essentially a well-maintained riverside spot with benches, bins, and enough room to spread out a blanket without treading on someone else's sandwiches.

The main draw is the water itself. The Swale moves with a decent pace here, and the riverbanks are leafy enough that you feel removed from the road, even though you're never far from civilisation. It's the kind of place walkers naturally gravitate towards - a logical stop on a longer route rather than a destination in itself. Kids will find enough to occupy them for a bit: stones to skip, water to paddle in if you're brave, and the usual riverside critter-spotting.

Don't expect play equipment or facilities beyond the basics. There's no cafe, no formal visitor centre. What you get is green space, parking, and peace. That's rather the point.

If you're staying at Hillside Caravan Park or Woodland Lakes Lodges, this makes a straightforward half-day outing - fifteen minutes' drive from either. Pack a picnic, bring the dog if you've got one, and allow an hour or so unless you're planning to walk further afield. Winter can be muddy, so waterproof boots aren't excessive. Free access, naturally, and never feels rammed even in summer.
