Millbeck Wildlife Area

The wetland here is proper good for spotting birds, especially if you time it right during migration seasons. Millbeck Wildlife Area sits just outside Beverley and comprises open water, reed beds, and rough grassland - the kind of place where you'll actually see something rather than trudge around wondering what you're looking for. Kingfishers, great crested grebes, and various warblers turn up regularly, depending on the time of year.

It's ideal if you're into birdwatching or wildlife photography, though even casual walkers find the paths pleasant enough. The site isn't huge - you can cover it in an hour or so without rushing - but the views across the water are genuinely nice on a clear day. Spring and autumn tend to be best when migration brings in unexpected visitors.

Free to access, which is always welcome. There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, so bring binoculars if you're serious and perhaps a field guide to avoid looking lost. The nearest town, Beverley, is close enough for a coffee beforehand.

If you're staying at Manor Farm Camping or Butt Farm, both within a couple of miles, Millbeck works well as a morning activity before heading into Beverley for lunch. It's not a full-day draw on its own, but paired with other attractions in the area - or simply as part of a relaxed park-based holiday - it justifies the short drive. Go in decent weather; muddy paths and poor light make the whole experience rather tedious.
