Mill Wood

Walking into Mill Wood feels like stepping into a proper Essex secret - a 40-hectare pocket of woodland just east of Tilbury that most people drive straight past on their way somewhere else. The forest floor is thick with leaf litter, and in spring the place erupts with bluebells that practically glow between the ancient oaks and hornbeams.

It's the kind of place where you can actually hear birdsong, which counts for something in Essex. The woodland paths meander through natural glades and occasional clearings where light breaks through the canopy. There's nothing dramatically steep or technically challenging about it - you can wander for an hour or three depending on your mood, and the trails link up nicely so you're not retracing your steps unless you want to.

Families with younger kids do well here because there's space to let them run between the trees without worrying about traffic or getting properly lost. Walkers treating it as a morning detour from Tilbury will find it adds genuine woodland cover to what's otherwise quite an industrial corner of Essex. History types won't find much beyond the wood itself, but the forest has that timeless quality that appeals to people who like their nature relatively undisturbed.

If you're based at Barleylands Campsite or Thamesview Camping, it's an easy drive over and worth combining with other local walks. Best visited in autumn or spring when the paths aren't too waterlogged and the light is actually decent. Free access and no particular crowds.
