Mill Road Park

The footpath curves round a bend near Kettering and suddenly you're walking beside proper woodland - Mill Road Park is the kind of nature reserve that sneaks up on you rather than announcing itself. There's no grand entrance, just trees, a working mill stream, and the sense that you've stumbled into something local people actually use rather than a polished tourist attraction.

It's manageable in size, which works in its favour. You can do a solid hour's walk here without feeling like you're trudging through endless acres, and the mix of paths means families with younger kids won't hit a dead end after ten minutes. The stream is the real draw - it's genuinely peaceful, the kind of place where you'll actually hear birdsong instead of your own footsteps echoing.

If you're staying at Northfield Farm just down the road, this is an easy local walk to stretch your legs without getting in the car. Lakeview Caravan Park is a bit further out, but still within reach for an afternoon sortie. The reserve doesn't charge, which is refreshing - just turn up and go. Best visited in spring or early summer when the woodland floor comes alive, though autumn has its own appeal if you're after moodier light.
