Mill Pool

The water at Mill Pool is deceptively still - a sheet of grey-green that reflects the Cambridgeshire sky without a ripple most days. It's a modest lake just outside Huntingdon, the kind of place locals know about but visitors often miss entirely, which is precisely why it works so well.

You won't find much infrastructure here. No cafe, no gift shop, no designated paths with interpretive boards. What you get instead is a genuinely quiet spot for a walk, with reedy banks and decent birdwatching if you're patient enough to stand still for five minutes. Bring binoculars. In spring and early summer, you'll hear more than you see - warblers in the scrub, the occasional splash of a fish.

It's the kind of place that appeals to people who actually want solitude rather than the Instagram version of it. Families with young children might find twenty minutes quite enough, unless your lot are properly into wildlife. But walkers and anyone with a camera will happily lose an hour here.

If you're staying at Grafham Water Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite - a solid five-mile hop north - Mill Pool makes a gentle alternative morning outing when you can't be bothered with the bigger water. Less crowded, no entry fees, no car park drama. Just bring a coat; there's not much shelter and the wind can turn it properly fresh even on what looks like a calm day.
